Who We Support

KyCOMPASS serves Kentucky healthcare providers who care for pregnant and postpartum individuals experiencing mental health or substance use concerns. Our program supports providers, not patients directly, by offering expert consultation, resources, and guidance to help them deliver high-quality, compassionate care.

When to Call KyCOMPASS

  • Starting or adjusting psychiatric medications during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Managing postpartum depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, OCD, or psychosis.
  • Interpreting screening scores such as EPDS, PHQ-9, or GAD-7.
  • Guidance on diagnostic protocols for perinatal mental health disorders.
  • Risk assessment and safety planning for suicidal thoughts.
  • Co-occurring substance use disorders (SUD) and perinatal mental health concerns.
  • Evidence-based therapy and treatment recommendations.
  • Access to provider resources: screening tools, diagnostic protocols, and patient education materials.
  • Requesting regional referral directories (after consultation).
  • Training & education opportunities: webinars, CME, practice-based training, outreach tools, peer learning, or grand rounds.
  • Connections to therapists or SUD treatment centers in your region.
  • Psychologist support for education on diagnoses and screening tools.

When NOT to Call KyCOMPASS

  • Emergencies or crises – call 911 or 988 immediately.
  • Direct patient counseling or therapy sessions – we support providers, not patients directly.
  • Social service needs, including housing, utilities, or food assistance (kynect.ky.gov).
  • Legal advice or immigration support.
  • Ongoing case management or non-clinical referrals.
  • Direct patient referrals – KyCOMPASS does not see patients.

What We Offer

KyCOMPASS provides comprehensive support to healthcare providers and perinatal professionals through a full range of services designed to enhance patient care:

  • Near Real-time or scheduled psychiatric consultation with experienced, trauma-informed clinicians.
  • Clinical decision-making support for perinatal mood disorders, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and substance use disorders.
  • Screening tools and clinical resources to guide individualized, patient-centered care.
  • Referral support to trusted perinatal and mental health providers across Kentucky.
  • Care coordination to strengthen provider-patient connections and ensure continuity of care.
  • Optional education and training tailored for your care team.
  • Provider-facing toolkits and educational materials, including Postpartum Support International support-group PDFs, and ACOG toolkits.

All KyCOMPASS services are free, secure, confidential, and easy to use, giving providers reliable, individualized support to improve outcomes for every expecting or postpartum patient.

Training and Education

Access trainings, toolkits, and educational resources for providers and staff covering a wide range of perinatal mental and behavioral health topics. Occasional opportunities for continuing education credits are also available to support professional development.
